President Joe La Mariana called the meeting to order at 12:16.
Pledge of Allegiance: A bearded Jerry Winges led us in a rather cacophonous rendition of our pledge.
Invocation: Jim Shypertt was the invoker of the day. He quoted the late actor, Christopher Plummer, best remembered for his role in the Sound of Music. His career spanned seven decades. Mr. Plummer did not like the term “retired” as he felt one would become a “vegetable” if no longer working. Jim noted the many of our members are “retired” but in the spirit of Rotary are serving our community with hard work assisting those in need of help. They are not “vegetables”, and their good works are to be admired. Jim is proud and thankful for being part of team Rotary. Go Rotary!
Announcements: President Joe noted that today was the third day of the Festival of Lights for Hanukkah and he commented on the lovely menorah in San Francisco’s Union Square.
- The Fun Fairies event, hosted by Suzanne Juptner on November 18th, was a huge success. This was one of our first opportunities to gather in person.
- Community Service chair, Cheryl Fama, reported on the work project of assembling holiday wreaths. These 40 wreaths will be delivered to Mills Estate Villa to decorate the doors of each resident. Rotarian and Executive director Delia Montano was the inspiration for this effort.
- Board of Directors meeting today at 4:30.
- Joe reviewed the pending decision to resume in-person lunch meetings on January 12. Our new venue will be Green Hills Country Club. Details will be forth coming.
- Joe acknowledged the Giving Tuesday donation to his President’s Club by council person Emily Beach. He further stated that Emily has formerly announced her intention to seek the congressional seat being vacated by Jackie Speier who is retiring.
- Cheryl announced a volunteer opportunity. The Child Care Coordinating Council (4Cs) is looking for help in distributing emergency supplies to childcare providers from a Burlingame location. More details to come.
- Bill Tiedeman, Foundation Chair, gave us an update from the recently completed Rotary Foundation drive. Our Club raised $4100. However, yet again, there was no Burlingame Rotary raffle prize winner. Maybe next year.

Breakout Session #1
Newscast+: Fritz Brauner and Jennifer Pence delivered another fun-filled newscast. Jennifer informed us that one week from today is “Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day”. With that thought in mind Jennifer took a survey of Rotarians to determine whether they would prefer to travel to the past or to the future. It appeared to be evenly split. There was banter and discussion as to why one might choose the particular alternative.
Breakout Session #2
Program: Cheryl Fama introduced our speaker,
Dr. Bonnie Jue. Dr. Jue graduated from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (UOP), where she has been a faculty member for over 25 years. She currently is an Assistant Professor at both UOP and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Schools of Dentistry. Among her many community activities, she serves as the Community Engagement Director for
Sonrisas Dental Health. Bonnie showcased the work that
Sonrisas does to bring oral hygiene and dental care into the community, especially for the underserved members. She provided a very comprehensive PowerPoint presentation. You will find the complete program in our Zoom recording
HERE.
President Joe thanked Bonnie Jue for her very inspiring presentation. He informed her that we would be donating five polio vaccinations as a way of honoring her appearance.
We then adjourned.
