A message from President Cheri Carr: Meeting Reminders: We meet every Wednesday of the month.

Lunch Meeting - Wednesday, August 7th, 2019
It was a fun-filled lunch meeting and a super interesting presentation by Alex Bujian who enlightened us with the history of our beloved City and the people who made it what it is today. President Cheri also reminded us that next week we have some special visitors, watch out for an email describing what's happening next meeting, and bring a friend.

President Cheri called the meeting to order–right on time.  She then provided the group with a Thought of the Day and then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. President Cheri then asked for guests and visiting Rotarians.  Visiting us from the Rotary Club of East Palo Alto was Borys Senyk.  Also joining us was Stacey Charlton who is a member of a club in Fall River, MA but lives here in Hillsborough.  She was most interested in the topic of our speaker.

Fritz Brauner was invited to the podium for his first Rotarian Spotlight.  The featured Rotarian was John Delaney who got up and informed the club of a recent professional change.  John is now the President and CEO of Beacon Business Bank, a small community bank with three offices.  Much to everyone’s delight he let us know that he will continue to remain active in our Rotary Club as well as his other community involvements.  Congratulations, John.

Fritz continued to entertain us with a little table by table research question.  Which Rotarian was born the furthest from Burlingame?  With the international flavor of our club, those born abroad were the “winners”.  Those in attendance represented London, the Philippines, Japan, Ukraine, and Palestine.

President Cheri then introduced our speaker, our very own Alex Buljan.  Alex gave us a historical overview of notable local figures from the past.  We all recognize most of the names because many of our streets are named after these individuals.  In 1913 there were very few streets in Hillsborough as the area was comprised of large estates that were the country homes of the wealthy members of Sa Francisco society.  Alex began with William Howard who was truly the founder of the town.  He came from Hillsborough, New Hampshire and therefore passed this name along to the town.  He had purchased the huge Rancho San Mateo from Pio Pico in 1846.  Another notable was William Ralston who made his fortune in silver with the Comstock Load.  He started the Bank of California and developed the Palace Hotel.  Harriett Pullman Carolan built the Carolan Mansion which still stands today.  William Sharon, another Comstock millionaire, purchased all of Ralston’s assets after his death.  Celia Tobin Clark built a large estate that still stands today.  Her family founded Hibernia Bank.  Thank you, Alex.  We’ll never drive these avenues without thinking about the individuals who built this community.

Mike Horwitz gave us an update on our major fundraiser golf tournament and dinner.  This year it will be held on Monday, October 21 at Green Hills Golf Club.  We need everyone’s assistance in finding sponsors and auction items.  Also please sign up for golf and/or dinner.  It is easy to do on ClubRunner, our website.  Just go to www.burlingamerotary.org for all the details.

John Delaney then told us about the annual Burlingame Art & Wine Festival on the weekend of August 17/18.  Our Rotary has always helped out at the beer and wine booth.  All the tips collected those two days are donated to our Service Fund.  John needs volunteers for a four-hour shift on Saturday and again on Sunday.

President Cheri informed us about our very special speaker next week.  Thanks to Pennie Lundberg we will have Gary Hughes, a major league baseball scout, and Serra alum.  It is a program not to be missed.  So bring along some guests.

Before ending the meeting President Cheri shared some “This Day in History” fun facts.  We were promptly dismissed at 1:30.
