We found our way to the truly fabulous Broadway Tennis Center on a glorious late summer day. This impressive facility is nothing imagined in our small city.  A lovely lunch was provided by our own Victoria Haket, Community Sales Director for Atria Senior Living, Burlingame. President Stan called the meeting to some semblance of order.  Actually, he whistled and shouted, but that’s what it took.  It was dress-down day and we reclined on lounges and enjoyed the facility thoroughly.  Lunch was delicious, of course.  We all managed to keep our plates on our laps, except for you-know-who!  Some people you can’t take anywhere.

Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation

Dick Gregory led the pledge in a northwesterly direction where we’re certain there was a flag.

Suzanne Juptner was scheduled, but was delayed by something critically important, we’re sure.  President Stan, at the ready, pulled out his phone and read lovely thoughts.  Suzanne joined us shortly thereafter.

Guests (Nary a one) Visiting Rotarians

Our favorite visiting Rotarian, Alden Cunningham. We should adopt him sometime soon. Also visiting was Frank Keck, past District Governor, Central Illinois.

Program

Jerry Kuehn introduced Broadway Tennis Center owners Anne and  Horacio Matta. They are parents of three boys. Anne fell in love with tennis at Age 9.  After college at the University of Texas, Anne turned pro and was ranked in the Top 100 in the world, competing at Wimbledon, The French Open, The Australian Open, and The U.S. Open. Horacio was born in Santiago, Chile, and was a two-time college national champion with Universidad Catolica de Chile.  Horacio turned pro at 19 and competed internationally for four years.

Ann shared that where the Broadway Tennis Center stands today was a large parking lot when they came upon it.  They envisioned a public, indoor tennis facility. Built in eleven months, the Tennis Center has been  in operation for 16 months.  In addition to tennis lessons, varied events are  held at the Center.  The height of the cavernous space is of regulation dimensions.  The flooring is Deco-Turf as used by the U.S. Open.

Horacio shared that he learned to play tennis and inherited his love of tennis from his father who is now 80.  His dad claims that he is now too old, too fat, and too tired to play tennis;  still, he just picked up his racquet again and is enjoying tennis once again.
Lots of young people are lured by the possibility of professional tennis careers to the extent that they will often elect to put off university educations.  Anne and Horacio specifically encourage that degrees be pursued.  There are areas for kids to do their homework upstairs, to help kids be properly directed and supported.

Broadway Tennis Center - A World Class Facility....

Nice people, world-class facility.  Thanks, again, Jerry and the Program Committee for another fine program.  Thanks again also to Victoria Haket for a yummy lunch.   broadway tenniscenter.com
The Center has activities for all ages from kids to seniors.  There are serious competitions and just-for-fun activities.  Anne says, “We meet you where you are and take you where you want to go.” Offerings include tournaments, leagues, private coaching, non-profit partnerships, hourly court rentals.
