Advanced hearing aids to help children with hearing loss
Oct. 09, 2019 12:15 p.m.
William Doyle (Bill) will be presenting on the Weingarten Children’s Center and how there have been advancements in students with hearing disabilities. Weingarten Children Center is teaching children to listen, speak, and learn to ensure a successful life in the future. Bill brings private sector career experience focused on building strong organizations by combining operating management, strategy, and capital. He has managed organizations, served on boards of directors of for-profit and non-profit entities, raised equity and debt capital as fund manager and investment banker, and provided strategic and operating advice as consultant. He holds a B.S.E. from Princeton University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Bill works with Weingarten Children’s Center and its strategic partners to strengthen, finance, and deliver highly effective early intervention and truly significant impact for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, wherever they may live and whatever their circumstances. Weingarten Children’s Center’s intensive education and therapy program teaches listening and spoken language to young children who are deaf or hard of hearing so they can close the gap with hearing peers and succeed in mainstream education starting in the first grade. A child who misses this window of neurological development will probably spend his or her school days in special education classes, falling progressively further behind, which is the outcome for up to 90% of children who are deaf or hard of hearing; that adds up to 900 children per grade in the state of California.

San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury
Mar. 18, 2020 12:15 p.m.
The Civil Grand Jury is a judicial body composed of 19 citizens. It is impaneled to act as an "arm of the court," as authorized by the State Constitution, to be a voice of the people and conscience of the community. The present Grand Jury system evolved from earlier ecclesiastical courts beginning in 1164 when Henry II of England impaneled the first 16-man Grand Jury to remove criminal indictments from the hands of the church. In 1635 the first American Grand Jury was impaneled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and by 1638 Grand Juries were present in all the colonies. These early Grand Juries began the practice of returning "presentments," which were primarily against public officials and different from criminal indictments. Forty-two states have some form of Grand Jury. California is still one of the states that allows prosecution to be initiated by either a Criminal Grand Jury indictment or judicial preliminary hearing. California impanels County Civil Grand Juries every year to conduct civil investigations of county and city government and to hear evidence to make recommendations or to decide whether to return indictments. In San Mateo County, if indictments need to be made, a separate criminal grand jury is impaneled. The San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury is an independent investigative body created by the California State Constitution. Composed of nineteen citizens, the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury serves as a "watchdog for citizens of the county." A Civil Grand Jury is charged with a grave responsibility. The Civil Grand Jury serves as an ombudsperson for the citizens of San Mateo County. The jury may receive and investigate complaints by individuals regarding the actions or performances of county or public officials. The attention of the entire county is centered upon an active Civil Grand Jury, and its every act is a matter of public interest. Malevolent and unfaithful public servants are uneasy, while honest citizens and the conscientious public servants are reassured. Therefore, Grand Jury service calls for diligence, impartiality, courage and responsibility. Empowered by the state judicial system, the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury submits meaningful solutions to a wide range of problems. The San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury is a volunteer, fact finding body with the potential to recommend constructive changes. Grand Jury work is demanding. Rewards for Grand Jury service come mostly from increased knowledge of local government, the judicial system, and the satisfaction of making a worthwhile contribution to the improvement of San Mateo County government operations. |

Parachutes on the Air
Mar. 25, 2020 12:15 p.m.
Rob Fenn is a team leader for Parachutes on the Air. This volunteer group jumps out of perfectly good airplanes to see how many contacts they can make on their radios before having to put away their gear and pop the chute. Rob should have some video of this amazing hobby, a niche of HAM radio. Parachute Mobile is a unique combination of ham radio and skydiving. Over the last nine years, the volunteers have completed 35 missions providing a fun and exciting new way to experiment with ham radio and other technical projects. The concept is simple: the skydiver opens his canopy as soon as he exits the plane and uses the altitude to his advantage and conducts simplex contacts. Starting off at approximately 13,000 feet in the air has been quite beneficial so that their listening audience can live vicariously through following each skydiver via APRS and through live streaming video. The group conducts 2 meter and 20-meter jumps. They are always trying to find new projects and ideas they can incorporate within the small payload they have available. This should be fun to find out about... |
