Bob Hortop is well known to our Club, having been a member for over twenty years. He served as an executive with the Sutter Health System for most of that time with a wide variety of responsibilities. After retiring from Sutter in 2013 he was recruited by the Mills Peninsula Medical Group to be their Executive Director. He continues in that role today. Bob is going to discuss physician organizations in the Bay Area, why physicians choose to join certain organizations, and how insurance companies contract with physicians to create their networks. |

During their stay they attended high school, learned some Japanese, and were generally immersed in the culture. You will hear their personal reflections, what they learned, and how they have grown as people because of the opportunity. They can’t wait to share with us the ways in which the trip has changed their lives. |

Village Movement

Scott McMullin, of Sequoia Village, will inform us about an innovative grassroots movement that has emerged in the last decade in the organizational field of support services for community-dwelling older adults. Started in 2015 as Sequoia Village, is serving members in Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City. In 2016 he launched Mid-Peninsula Village to serve the communities of San Mateo, Burlingame, and Hillsborough. The Village movement is one of the most viable options to enable our society cope with the upcoming aging revolution.

Scott McMullin is the President of Villages of San Mateo County, a group of local residents with the goal of helping each other to age in place. They do this by providing access to support services that help people engage in community activities and continue to live independently. They started in 2015 as Sequoia Village, serving members in Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City, including Redwood Shores. In late 2016, they launched Mid Peninsula Village to serve the communities of San Mateo, Burlingame, and Hillsborough.

Don Shoecraft is a journalist and writer with more than 40 years’ experience writing news, opinion and communications for newspapers, corporate clients, public agencies and nonpro ts. He has been active in the Peninsula community for many years and has served on numerous community boards, including Community Gatepath, the Child Care Coordinating Council, the San Mateo Police Activities League and several chambers of commerce. He is also past president of the San Mateo Rotary Club. He retired in 2015, then unretired to become founding editor and lead writer for Redwood City’s Climate Magazine, retired again in 2017, then unretired for the most recent time this January to create an association with printers whose services he’d purchased for 25 years. He merged MTK Communications, his company, with Productive Printing and Alpha Press to form Essential Printing Associates, which provides digital and o set printing in addition to resources for clients in many disciplines, from video to advertising to web. He is author of four o cially commissioned histories, Purple Cow to Purple Qumquat, the centennial history of the San Francisco Boys and Girls Club, Born of Fire, the history of the City of Brisbane, Crossroads Community, the history of the City of San Bruno and Wings of the Phoenix, History of San Francisco International Airport, which is the subject of Wednesday’s presentation. |

Crowden Music Center in Berkeley is a non-profit Arts and Education organization, of which Rotary member, Cary Koh is an alumnus, a former faculty member, and the current Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. Crowden’s mission is to combine music and education to nurture, develop, and inspire students of all ages, and provides essential support to the musical life of the community. Mr. Eugene Sor and Cary will talk about their experiences with Crowden Music center and then they will introduce one or two small ensembles who will play a movement from the chamber music repertoire. Cary will also play a short movement (possibly from Vivaldi’s 4 seasons) with the ensembles and then discuss the programmatic aspects of the Vivaldi 4 seasons, and how these ideas are considered and implemented into a performance. There will also be a Q&A for the all presenters, young and older. |

Wendi Upchurch and Emily Matthews will introduce David Upchurch, VP of Jaguar Health. He can discuss drug development, launch of new therapies, manufacturing of commercial drugs, and the regulatory environment around pharmaceuticals. He will speak to us about “How do your pills actually get in that bottle?” David Upchurch is an experienced pharmaceutical executive with over 25 years in the industry, and joined Jaguar’s team in 2016. Prior to Jaguar, Mr. Upchurch held positions of increasing seniority in pharmaceutical manufacturing and supply chain management for Agouron Pharmaceuticals and Gilead Sciences. Mr. Upchurch served key roles in authoring global marketing submissions, securing approvals, launch, and lifecycle management for over a dozen novel pharmaceutical products, and managed international health authority site inspections on a regular basis. Mr. Upchurch holds a BS from The University of the South, an MS from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and an MBA from the University of San Diego. |

He also directed a national training center where he was responsible for the training and development of thousands of New York Stock Exchange registered representatives. Jim is the co-founder of the Karel-Holderreed Biotechnology Stock Index, the first stock index of biotechnology companies. He previously hosted an investment program for Public Broadcasting Systems and wrote a regular column, “Investment Insights,” for The San Mateo Times newspaper. He has been an acknowledged investment industry resource to San Francisco’s ABC-TV affiliate and has been quoted in such publications as USA Today. Barron’s. New York Times. Technology Magazine. San Francisco Chronicle. San Jose Mercury News, and Los Angeles Times. Stan Moore has been working with Evan Jones with the Mid Peninsula Boys and Girls Club. They have a process to match up children's readers with a leveling system done on laptop computers. They have about 2 - 2.5 hours of work for us where we match books with a leveling system.
We need 12 - 14 volunteers for this project on Wednesday,April 25th from 3:00 to about 5:30pm at their location: 200 N. Quebec Street, San Mateo, between 3rd and Peninsula. We can bring our own laptops to do this......or they can provide too.

Rachel Meyer is the San Francisco Bay Area - Executive Director of the CuriOdyssey Museum at Coyote Point Museum. Rachel Meyer, Executive Director, joined CuriOdyssey in April 2007. Prior to joining the museum, she served as the executive director of the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo for 12 years, where she led a turnaround effort that included capital upgrades, new exhibits, and new programs. Prior to that, Rachel worked at the Exploratorium in San Francisco for 19 years, nine of which were under the tutelage of Exploratorium founder and renowned physicist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, serving as Director of Facilities, Director of Programs, and Chief Exhibit Curator. While at the Exploratorium, Rachel advised numerous science and children’s museums, nationally and internationally, on effective interactive educational strategies.
